Observation Narrative
Plot location: On somewhat elevated "island" at upper edge of Northwest River swamps, ca. 0.9 miles south of junction of Indian Creek Road and Galloway Road. Plot center marked by a 1" white PVC pipe.
Plot is representative of Pinus taeda-dominated, non-riverine wetland forests ocurring on saturated flats with mineral soils and permanently elevated water tables. This community type occurs extensively in the northern portion of the Great Dismal Swamp, with outliers on terrace flats bordering the bottomlands of the Northwest and North Landing River. Normally a floristically depauperate type, with dense Arundinaria gigantea ssp. tecta understories crowding out most other shurb and herbaceous plants. However, a diversity of plants growing in and around a small seepage area contributes to an unusual species richness in this stand. On slightly higher portions of the mesic "island" at this site, the community grades into a cutover beech-oak terrestrial forest.
