Observation Narrative
Plot location: In a short tributary swamp of Indian Creek, 0.8 miles SSE of Indian Creek Rd. Bridge and 0.8 miles SSW of Northwest River Park entrance. Plot center marked with a 1" white PVC pipe.
A semipermanently flooded hardwood swamp occupying alluvial, mineral soil in a headwaters tributary of the Northwest River. The canopy is dominated by a nearly pure stand of Populus heterophylla, an intolerant tree which probably invaded this habitat following clearcuttin. An abundance of subcanopy and sapling Fraxinus pennsylvanica in the stand suggests a successional trend toward future dominance of that species. The vegetation of this plot has a very high species richness compared to most wetland communities of the region.
