Observation Narrative
Plot location: In a small tributary ca. 0.9 miles ENE of the VA/NC line where it crosses the Northwest River. Plot center marked with a 1" white PVC pipe.
Water depth= 15-25cm deep.
Semipermanently flooded, alluvial mineral soils here support a nice, second-growth swamp forest of Taxodium distichum, Fraxinus pennsylvanica, and Nyssa biflora. When first observed on 14 August 1995, water levels were somewhat lower and masses of the floating aquatic plant Limnobium spongia were prevalent throughout this swamp. No Limnobium was seen on the 13 June 1996 sampling date but Carex spp, especially C. bromoides and C. seorsa, were abundant and fruiting.
