Observation Narrative
A slight nutrient gradient exists here; close to the river's edge frequent flooding results in enhanced fertility, whereas away from the river channel, the vegetation reflects diminished fertility. Soils in the plot are perennially saturated and organic; in places the organic mat quakes. The vegetation might be described as nutrient-poor marsh or nutrient-rich fen. Fire may play an important role in suppressing woody species and maintaining the graminoid vegetation. Succession to woody vegetation appears to be a threat here.
Additional plants found in similar wetlands farther north include Phragmites australis (possibly native here), Schoenoplectus americanus, Xyris sp. (rare here), Iris virginica, Cyperus haspan and Carex hyalinolepis.
