Observation Narrative
Plot lies in a patch mosaic of interspersed Zizania aquatica and Pontederia cordata, the latter of which occurs with Hibiscus moscheutos and Polygonum punctatum as important associates. A small slough evidently runs through part of plot, which drains and feeds deeper and more open patch of marsh containing a clump of Nyssa biflora. Plot was laid out to avoid a clump of Acer rubrum and to minimize inclusion of Zizania, which constitutes the leading dominant in Cumberland Marsh and forms near monocultures in the immediate vicinity. A single small (< 10 sq. m) patch of Zizaniopsis miliacea occurs near the riverward side of plot. As in plots PAMR005 and PAMR006, it is difficult to determine duration of inundation and to estimate surface substrate cover, as high tide coincides with the time of sampling, but water depth appears greater here than in the previous two plots.
