Observation Narrative
An unusual, diverse, and heterogeneous community occurs along a narrow sand and gravel bar between the Pamunkey River and railroad tracks on the Pamunkey Indian Reservation. A linear plot layout was necessary to conform to the shape of the bar, but it was impossible to orient the plot so as both to exclude overhanging tree cover and to restrict sampling to vegetated bar surface. Like many such narrow bars on this freshwater section of the Pamunkey, chiefly where the shoreline grades abruptly to much steeper, non-alluvial upland slopes, Justicia americana is the dominant species, but the vegetation here appears considerably more diverse and heterogeneous than that of somewhat smaller bars observed from a distance elsewhere. This site supports several rare species, including Eriocaulon parkeri and Bacopa innominata. The plot was sampled as the tide was rising, and some taxa along the outer edge may have been missed.
Plot permanently marked with PVC stakes.
