Observation Narrative
This plot captures a low, moderately diverse marsh in which several species share dominance. The abundance of Orontium aquaticum is unusual for tidal systems on the Pamunkey River. High cover of Ceratophyllum demersum and Ludwigia palustris likely reflects proximity to the largest tidal mud flat on the river. Stand is located in the interior of marsh and is flanked by narrow fringe of tidal swamp forest and tidal shrubland, with a narrow band of Zizania aquatica between the plot and Clayborne Creek. The plot itself evidently lies in a shallow depression, although apparent topographic relief may only reflect differences in vegetation height. This marsh occupies ca. 2 ha and includes considerably heterogeneity. Of particular note are patches strongly dominated by Acorus calamus (plot PAMR011). Local hydrology may be complex, with an extensive network of drainage channels.
