Observation Narrative ? Plot captures a stand of Acorus calamus adjacent to tidal shrub swamp dominated by Alnus serrulata and tidal hardwood swamp dominated by Nyssa biflora. Many of the Acorus stems have already senesced, and many of the taller (> 1 m) culms have been matted down or blown over. The emergence of younger, shorter blades through the dense leaf mat gives the impression of a two-aged stand. A small slough runs through one side of the plot. The accumulation of sediment around the bases of the Acorus clumps has produced a feature similar to hummock-and-hollow microtopography, although the vertical relief is < 10 cm.
