Observation Narrative
A stand of tall Zizania aquatica over a thick, raised mat of Murdannia keisak and Leersia oryzoides. Clumps of Zizania have accumulated sediment, which has concentrated Murdannia growth and resulted in slight but pronounced hummock-and-hollow microtopography. Bidens laevis is in full bloom and quite apparent; consequently, cover may have been overestimated. Senescence of Zizania leaves is fairly well advanced. Vegetation is not as thick and impenetrable and that of similar stands sampled at Cumberland Marsh. Some standing water is present a few hours after high tide. An adjacent slough supports a relatively large component of Sagittaria latifolia and may warrant future sampling, although such a narrow patch would require careful plot placement and may not be sufficiently large to detect on remote imagery.
0 - ~100 - wet, unconsolidated organic matter, becoming distinctly clayey with depth
~100 - soil has become a loosely consolidated clay with only fine organic matter
