Observation Narrative
Small (ca. 0.3 ha), open, low marsh dominated by Leersia oryzoides and Pontederia cordata adjacent to taller, Zizania-dominated marsh along Big Creek. From quick, initial reconnaissance this stand appears to be one of the larger low Peltandra virginica - Pontederia cordata marshes along Big Creek, although there may be more extensive examples of this vegetation type in the interior of Cumberland (aka Lilly Point) Marsh along some of the larger drainage channels. This plot lies adjacent to one such channel and to a smaller tributary thereof. For once cover of Murdannia may have been overestimated, as Leersia is the clear ground-layer dominant beneath the open canopy of Pontederia.
