Observation Narrative
This stand of relatively short-statured Zizania aquatica appears to represent the predominant vegetation of the marsh along Big Creek. Plot location is not ideal; this site was sampled while Nancy Van Alstine and Allen Belden searched for Aeschynomene virginica. The height of the Zizania canopy is uneven, and some trampling of vegetation has evidently taken place. Side drainage channels further constrain plot placement, but vegetation included within plot is homogeneous. Ca. 1 hr after high tide 19 cm of standing water remains in plot. Hydrology here is unclear; a dendritic network of drainage channels appears to be present.
19- water level
0 - wet, dark brown, fibric muck, containing abundant roots of leaves of Zizania aquatica; soil is too wet for full examination of profile
