Observation Narrative
Plot lies in a rather extensive (ca. 1.5 ha) stand of low marsh dominated by Nuphar advena, Peltandra virginica and Pontederia cordata, the co-occurrence of which prompted sampling. Leersia oryzoides is scattered throughout this site but never attains the dominance often seed in conjunction with Pontederia. Zizania aquatica stems are present in lower density. Unlike many other sites with Pontederia and Peltandra near the fringe of marshes largely dominated by Zizania, this stand does not appear to follow a major drainage channel. Subtle hummock-and-hollow microtopography exists, but this phenomenon has likely resulted from the accumulation of sediment and organic matter around the bases of existing clumps rather than representing a geomorphologic feature on which plants become established. A fencepost lies prostrate just outside the plot, but there are no other signs of anthropogenic disturbance.
