Observation Narrative
An extensive high marsh dominated by Zizania aquatica, with relatively high density of Bidens laevis, occurs near the uppermost tidal portion of Clayborne Creek. The hydrology within the plot is unclear; very small, shallow drainage channels appear scattered throughout, but these features may be a function of incoming tide and soil compaction due to sampling. Where such compaction has occurred, some water appears on the soil surface, which suggests that the water table lies just below the surface ca. 2.5 hr before unusually high high tide. Cover of Bidens may appear higher than it truly is because of copious flowering.
0 - 20 - wet, dark brown, unconsolidated, very fibric muck, with very little silt
20 - substantially greater silt content; soil becomes less fibric with depth
