Observation Narrative
This plot, which captures a diverse low marsh, is located ca. 30 m from plot PAMR030. The site was chosen to capture relatively high cover of Schoenoplectus tabernaemontani, as well as some Typha angustifolia. The density of the latter species is higher outside the plot, although many stems are dead or already senescent. A narrow fringe of Alnus serrulata ends just outside the plot and extends toward the Pamunkey River. The interior of this marsh comprises roughly equal proportions of low, more diverse marsh (of which this plot represents a characteristic sample), and taller, less diverse patches of Zizaniopsis miliacea. Scattered clumps of Cephalanthus occidentalis are also present, with many dead or senescent stems. In addition one very small (ca. 25 sq. m) patch of Rosa palustris is present among the Zizaniopsis. From a cursory glance this marsh appears to be one of the more diverse and heterogeneous creek marshes along the Pamunkey.
