Observation Narrative
This barren near the northeastern corner of Pedlar Hills NAP (Northcross tract) neither is as extensive nor harbors as many noteworthy species as those barrens to the south and west, but it is in outstanding condition and comprises a classic mosaic of woodland and graminoid-dominated openings. Although signature of open barren extends well downslope on DOQQ, full extent of this community could not be determined due to extremely steep slope. Hybanthus concolor here is especially abundant, and Carex pensylvanica seems to attain higher cover than either Schizachyrium scoparium or Danthonia spicata, neither of which had yet flowered at the time of sampling. Snapped saplings near corner 2-4 and scattered snags attest to past minor disturbance. It was very difficult to take compass readings and to get plot square on this steep, undulating topography; measurements should have been adjusted for slope.
Phlox subulata present on barren upslope from plot.
