Observation Narrative
This is a superlative glade. It follows the crest of a south facing spur ridge for a distance of about 150 m. Average width is about 15 m. The argillaceous dolomite of the Elbrook Formation seems to readily weather to gravel and soil material and it is this soil which promotes a grassland understory on this dry site. The presence of Senecio plattensis, Parthenium auriculatum and Echinacea laevigata suggests high magnesium content of the soil. These species elsewhere occur on ultramafic, non-calcareous soils in Virginia. The mesotrophic indicator here is Pycnanthemum incanum, but it is scarce. It makes better sense to classify the community/site as submesotrophic on the basis of several indicators. Quercus muhlenbergii in plot about 17 cm dbh.
Plot located in the lower portion of the glade west of quarry face, where the spur ridge and glade broaden somewhat. Community is technically a woodland, but this smaller plot size seemed adequate.
