Observation Narrative
Plot location: Upland flat < 0.2 km SW of Route 613, 0.6 km NW of Route 689.
Plot located on a very dry, oligotrophic, broad ridge crest. A somewhat variable stand co-dominated by Quercus montana and Q. alba but also containing some Q. coccinea covers the ridge. Deciduous ericads form large patches in the shrub and herb layers. Vaccinium pallidum is the dominant ericad in the area of the plot; Gaylussacia bacata (absent in plot) is prevalent in other areas of the site. Very abundant recruitment of Q. montana in the subcanopy, shrub, and herb layers suggests that this species will maintain dominance well into the future, barring catastrophic disturbances.
