Plot location: shallow ravine one mile SSE of junction Routes 651 and 621.
This site contains a small fragment of older hardwood forest that remains among old clearings, pine stands, and young secondary forests in the Phelps Wildlife Management Area. The overstory is dominated by very tall, straight Liriodendron tulipifera(up to 63 cm DBH), with a slightly shorter stratum of comparably sized Fagus grandifolia and Quercus rubra. Shrub and herbaceous vegetation are extremely sparse, perhaps because of extremely nutrient-poor soils.
