Plot location: ravine slope just west of pipeline right-of-way, 0.6 miles SE of Mt. Holly Church on Rt. 651.
This stand of mixed oaks (Quercus alba, Q. montana, Q. coccinea) regenerated largely from stump sprouts. Stand composition is typical of oak/heath forests on nutrient-poor soils of the northern VA Piedmont, with large patches of Gaylussacia baccata, Vaccinium pallidum, and more locally Kalmia latifolia. The herb layer consists almost entirely of low heath shrubs and woody seedlings.
