Plot location: shallow ravine 0.1 miles west of powerline right-of-way, 0.7 miles SW of Sumerduck.
Field estimate from topo: (UTME): 261001 (UTMN): 4259960.
The plot was positioned in the bottom of a shallow, mesic ravine in a dissected upland of the northern Piedmont. The forest here is a rather diverse, mixed hardwood stand with an overstory of Quercus alba, Liriodendron tulipifera, Fagus grandifolia, Carya glabra, and Acer rubrum, with very patchy shrub and herb layers. The moisture-loving species Dryopteris carthusiana and Circaea lutetiana have the highest covers among herbs. This stand was logged in the past, but is more mature than most forests at Phelps WMA.
