Observation Narrative
Plot located in a large, dry flatwoods over Triassic diabase. Soils are classified as theJackland (Iredell) series and have a pronounced, impermeable, clay hardpan. The ground surface at this site is likely rock-hard during droughts and waterlogged during wet periods. This forest has been extensively cut and grazed in the past and much of it is in degraded condition; the plot was placed in the most intact and mature portion found. Carya glabra, Quercus stellata, and Q. alba are the leading canopy dominants, and these have good to excellent recruitment in sub-canopy layers as well. Danthonia spicata and other dry-site graminoids are prevalent in the herb layer.
