Observation Narrative
Talus supports thin mats of fertile organic rich soil. Rocks are loose and footing is sometimes uncertain. Slopes such as this, lacking deep mineral soils support a specialized type of eutrophic forest. Conspicuously lacking are species such as Caulophyllum thalictroides, Allium tricoccum, and Trillium spp. Interestingly, Aesculus flava achieves dominance on these talus habitats. Acer saccharum is of secondary importance. Throughout its range, Gymnocladus dioicus demands rich soil and is intolerant of shading; it therefore grows near open river shores, open marshes, etc.
Plants inhabiting adjacent mineral soil areas include Hepatica acutiloba, Diplazium pycnocarpon, and Adiantum pedatum.
Plot located on steep talus along Big Cedar Creek near confluence with Clinch River; plot begins a few meters upslope from trail.
