Observation Narrative
Small but exemplary stand of xeric calcareous cliff on narrow, knife-edge section of Copper Ridge southwest of the observation platform. Plot architecture confined to 4 x 25 m dimensions to maintain homogeneity of composition and aspect, as well as to permit sampling on extremely steep cliff edge. Herb layer is surprisingly lush and diverse for a xeric cliff community, but this ecological community group was assigned based on slope azimuth and codominance of Juniperus virginiana and Quercus muhlenbergii in the canopy. Herb layer is characterized by local patch dominance by several species: Phlox stolonifera, Zigadenus elegans ssp. glaucus, Solidago sphacelata, and Carex eburnea. The total cover of the shrub stratum belies the diversity and density of woody species. Rawinski sampled similar vegetation to the north, but somehow managed to lay out a square 400 sq. m plot. It is likely that that plot was placed on a more gentle
landform, was located off the preserve, or spanned an ecotone between true xeric calcareous cliff and dry montane calcareous forest/woodland.
