Observation Narrative
Plot location: ravine slope ca. 0.1 miles S of Banister River and 1.7 miles SE of Transco Village.
Rock Types Present: locally abundant boulders (does not look like shale or siltstone).
A mixed, dry-mesic oak-hickory-beech forest on an east-facing Piedmont ravine slope. A local boulder stream appears to provide microhabitats for both basic-soil plants such as Cerci canadensis var. canadensis and acidophiles such as Vaccinium pallidum. This ravine supports one of the few medium-age tracts of hardwood forest remaining in the White Oak Mountain WMA; most of the area has been either cut more recently or converted to pine plantation.
