Observation Narrative
Plot captures characteristic pine-oak / heath woodland vegetation on very steep, convex, northwest-facing slope. Pinus pungens forms a low, open, interrupted canopy with widely spaced crowns. Scattered emergent stems of Quercus montana and Q. coccinea, plus at least one individual of P. rigida, are also present. Thick, chiefly evergreen shrub layer consists of two distinct strata. The taller shrub component reaches a height of 2.5 m and comprises Kalmia latifolia, Quercus ilicifolia, and Buckleya distichophylla. Lower, more continuous shrub layer contains a high density of Pieris floribunda, Gaylussacia baccata, and Kalmia < 1 m tall. Navigating through plot is very difficult and plot corners may not be even close to square.
Compositional data (including cover estimates) collected by Paul Clarke.
0 - 1 - litter
1 - 5 - duff (up to 10 cm deep)
5 - moist, light brownish gray to light brown, sandy to very sandy (but becoming less so with depth) loam, with abundant gravel and pebbles
