Observation Narrative
Plot contains most of the usual southern Blue Ridge suspects except Oxydendrum arboreum. Plot sampled at Paul Clarke's suggestion; principle intent was to capture Castanea dentata, but Galax urceolata cover is higher than that seen elsewhere at Poor Mountain. Tree stature suggests a young stand, and virtually all oaks are of sprout origin. Much of the Kalmia latifolia stems are gnarled and evidently stressed or already dead. Gap present above module 8 has resulted in more vigorous growth of Kalmia underneath and increased recruitment of Sassafras albidum. Adjacent clump of Castanea in module 3 is largest in plot, but many stems within are dead. One pronounced fire scar observed on snag in plot. In collecting compositional data Pinus rigida was initially overlooked altogether; revised cover values for Pinus pungens and P. rigida were based on density and size of trees tallied in each module. These data should be interpreted with caution, especially presence at particular spatial scales.
Plot overlaps with stewardship plot 13-1.
