Observation Narrative
Plot location: Floodplain forest along Swift Creek Lake. See form for attached map.
Hummock and hollow microtopography.
This floodplain forest is a slight depression within the surrounding floodplain forest. Graminoid cover in the plot is significantly higher than in the surrounding forest (holds water longer but is dry now). Other trees in the area include Liriodendron tulipifera, Quercus rubra, Pinus taeda, Quercus palustris. Graminoid cover determinations were difficult, but Poa autumnalis, Carex debilis and Carex albolutescens seem to have the greatest cover/number of clumps. Many of the species in the herb layer come close to a cover of 3 (there are many individuals -particularly of Ulmus alata, Viburnum dentatum, Carpinus caroliniana, Mitchella repens, Euonymous americanus, Viola cucullata, etc). See form for sketch of plot descirption and directions to Swift Creek Lake.
