Observation Narrative
Stand heavily dominated by relatively young, pole-sized Tsuga canadensis, with admixture of Liriodendron tulipifera, Fagus grandifolia, and Quercus spp. Apparently even-aged distribution suggests that stand arose after logging. Most Tsuga boles are straight, crowns shallow and narrow, and epicormic sprouts and dead lower lateral branches largely absent. These characteristics and rapid early growth of two cored individuals suggest stand initiation under conditions of high light availability. Some stumps are present, and several Tsuga individuals are split < 2 m off ground. Coarse woody debris abounds and may indicate windthrow in recent years. Intermittent stream channels rund through plot. Debris flows indicate that some water likely fills these channels at least annually. There is no evidence of infestation by hemlock woolly adelgid.
