Observation Narrative
Stand of overstory Fagus grandifolia and subcanopy Tsuga canadensis, transitional to Fagus-Quercus alba upland forest. Intermittent stream runs down lower side of plot, with steep bank 2-3 m high and adjacent to modules 6-9. Most species additions in residual modules occur on this bank. There is no direct evidence of infestation by hemlock woolly adelgid, but several Tsuga individuals have poorly developed or damaged crowns and a few snags are present. Patch of more open canopy cover and lesser component of Tsuga (possibly an old gap) occurs in module 5. Debris flows are evident in channel, but only lowermost 1-2 m of plot probably ever floods.
Directions to plot: Follow gravel road along Chopawamsic Creek from Russell Road. Park just before fifth crossing of creek and cross creek on old concrete dam. Proceed SSW up ravine along unnamed tributary of Chopawamsic Creek. Ca. 800 m from road, two intermittent streams conflow to form primary tributary. Plot lies along lower slope between these two branches and adjacent to one on left. From quartzite boulder at confluence (between Fagus grandifolia and Tsuga canadensis): 16.1 m @ 250 deg to Stake A.
