Observation Narrative
White Marsh supports a diverse mosaic of distinct vegetation patches, ranging from low, forb-dominated marsh to taller Zizania- and Typha-dominated marsh. This plot captures a moderately diverse Acorus calamus patch with a few unusual components: Orontium aquaticum is of particular note, but Aster puniceus and Sagittaria latifolia are also unusually abundant. All three taxa are more numerous closer to the river, but this location was chosen because the composition appears more representative and because this portion of stand appears less disturbed by river overwash. As is typical of Acorus stands late in the growing season, most culms are senescent and matted down by tides, but vigorous young recruits 10-20 cm tall abound. It is difficult to estimate Acorus cover at the height of the growing season -- it may have been < 75% -- and to ascertain the hydrology on this day of an unusually low low tide.
