Observation Narrative
Pronounced hummock-and-hollow microtopography supports raised clumps of Carex stricta and assemblage of characteristically freshwater and oligohaline species. The co-occurrence of Carex stricta, Thelypteris palustris var. pubescens, and Rosa palustris has been observed in local stands on the Pamunkey and Mattaponi Rivers. A common feature appears to be slight isolation (via land form or adjacent shrubland) from the main tidal channel, which may allow greater silt accumulation and consequent establishment of dense Carex tussocks, which furthers the development of hummocks.
