Observation Narrative
Plot location: Riverbend Park; slope above south parking area, south of Visitor's Center. The vegetation is a medium-age forest co-dominated by Fagus grandifolia, Quercus rubra, and Liriodendron tulipifera, and a sparse understory of Carpinus caroliniana and Lindera benzoin. The herb layer has moderate cover of spring ephemerals, especially Cardamine concatenata, Asarum canadense, and Claytonia virginica. Although the soil base status is quite low, the presence of Quercus muhlenbergii and the overall composition suggests a more basic forest than that found on most of the Riverbend Park area.
