Observation Narrative
The plot is located on a high, silty bar / bank along the Potomac River at the south end of Riverbend Park. It captures a vegetation zone that is very narrow and located between the forested floodplain and the equally narrow exposed river shore that is dominated by annuals (see plot RIVB021, which is located adjacent). This habitat is exposed for longer periods that the shoreline zone, and is less frequently inundated. Coarse, weedy perennials, especially Eupatorium serotinum, Verbesina alternifolia, and Polygonum spp., dominate the vegetation. Overhanging cover by Acer saccharinum trees in the adjacent forest is significant (ca. 35%).
