Observation Narrative
Extremely diverse but moderately disturbed stand with a substantial component of exotic species. A salient feature is the very open understory, particularly at the far (south) end of plot towards the gas pipeline. Regeneration of Acer saccharum and especially of oak spp. is scant. One large old gap in module 4 has been mostly filled in by expansion of adjacent crowns; downed boles lies across module 7. Coarse woody debris is relatively sparse and consists mostly of fine twigs and small branches. Several dead stems of Cornus florida are present. Species identification posed some problems. Most stems originally identified as Carya cordiformis were later determined to be Q. alba, and initial identification of Quercus shumardii changed in 2001 to Q. rubra. Cover of Podophyllum peltatum is undoubtedly higher earlier in the growing season.
