Observation Narrative
Plot located on upper slope above the Maury River, southwest of Poorhouse Mountain. Hepatica acutiloba indicates permesotrophic conditions (sensu Rawinski 1992), but this species is sparse here and the entire stand is best classified as mesotrophic due to the abundance of indicators such as Asarum canadense, Asimina triloba, Botrychium virginianum, Cimicifuga racemosa, Dirca palustris, Hepatica americana, Sanicula canadensis and Thalictrum dioicum. The plot includes a gap from a dead tree, the increased light allowing a few light demanding species to grow here: e.g., Galium boreale, Rosa carolina, Euphorbia corollata. Soils atypically dry for Thuja slope forest vegetation. Herb layer very sparse due to relatively dense shade from predominantly evergreen tree canopy and shrub layer.
Measured trees in plot (dbh inc cm.): Thuja occidentalis (43), Tsuga canadensis (27), Quercus muhlenbergii (24.5), Liriodendron tulipifera (32.5).
