Observation Narrative
Maritime dune grassland dominated by Ammophila breviligulata and Spartina patens occupies 10-20 m wide band just behind crest of foredune along extensive stretches of the bayshore side of Savage Neck NAP. It is difficult to distinguish among sterile individuals of different grass species, but rank order of cover estimates is probably accurate. Overwash likely constitutes an important if infrequent disturbance; numerous dead stems of dominant grasses are matted down around culm bases. This material was considered organic matter in estimating surface substrate cover. Microtopography within plot is concave from bay inland and straight but undulating parallel to shore.
