Observation Narrative
This plot is located on the upper slope of a gentle interfluve between two ravines. Soils are evidently deep and fertile, supporting a tall forest dominated by Liriodendron tulipifera but with considerable admixture of Fagus grandifolia, Fraxinus americana, Betula lenta, and Quercus rubra (outside the plot). Some of the trees are impressively large (e.g., a 91 cm dbh Liriodendron and an 81 cm dbh Fraxinus). Young Acer saccharum, likely a potential climax dominant on this site along with Fagus, is abundant in the understory. Large clones of Podophyllum peltatum and Uvularia perfoliata dominate the herb layer.
