Observation Narrative
The vegetation of this plot is a mature, post-agricultural forest that is rapidly succeeding to a mixed, mesophytic stage. It is part of the same stand represented by plot SCRU006 that occupies a gently rolling upland that was probably open ~100 years ago. However, this part of the stand was almost completely dominated by Liriodendron tulipifera. Currently, the large Liriodendron (up to 91 cm dbh) form a super-canopy over dense recruitment of Fagus grandifolia, the largest of which is now > 20 meters tall. The herb layer is sparse.
