Observation Narrative
The plot was placed in the most intact portion of an eastern hemlock-hardwood forest that formerly extended for several hundred meters on sheltered slopes along Scotts Run above its mouth. It covers part of the lower slope, with its bottom edge located on the very narrow floodplain. Most of the large overstory Tsuga canadensis in this stand are now deceased following an outbreak of hemlock woolly adelgid that began in the late 1980's. There are three large Tsuga specimens still alive (although with significant foliage loss) in the plot, along with numerous saplings and small trees. Associated hardwoods are Betula lenta, Quercus rubra, and Quercus montana (mostly outside the plot).
0-2 cm: leaf litter
2-15+ cm: organic humus
15+ cm: silt loam, light brown layer
Red clay loam subsoil
Organic deposits between boulders; very deep organic layer; little mineral soil near surface.
