Observation Narrative
The plot is located in a small stand that contrasts sharply with the prevalent Liriodendron - Fagus - Quercus forest of the Scotts Run Nature Preserve uplands. This vegetation is more of an oak-hickory forest, with Quercus rubra, Quercus alba, Carya alba, Carya ovalis, and Liriodendron tulipifera sharing overstory dominance. Carpinus caroliniana and Acer rubrum are prevalent in the understory. The herb layer is quite diverse and contains a mixture of mesophytic and dry-mesophytic species; Phegopteris hexagonoptera, Amphicarpaea bracteata, Desmodium nudiflorum, and Brachyelytrum erectum are especially prominent in this assemblage.
