Observation Narrative
This rich, mixed hardwood stand occupies a cool, sheltered, concave slope above the Potomac River, just upstream from the mouth of Scotts Run. Large, tall Liriodendron tulipifera characterize the overstory, with considerable admixture from mature Fagus grandifolia, Fraxinus americana, and Quercus rubra. Much smaller Acer saccharum are common in the understory, suggesting future successional development. A bouldery seep is located just west and downslope of the plot.
