Observation Narrative
This plot captures a flood-battered woodland that occupies a bouldery "knickpoint" intruding from the otherwise sandy and forested shore of the Potomac River near the downstream end of Scotts Run Nature Preserve. This habitat is scoured by even moderate floods and is inundated for prolonged periods of high river flow. Platanus occidentalis and Betula nigra comprise most of the woody vegetation and are stunted and heavily leaning, with numerous upright water sprouts. The herbaceous flora is diverse but quite sparse, being restricted to pockets of sand among the rocks.
