Observation Narrative
This vegetation occurs at the crest of a high elevation cliff and exposure to wind is severe. Tree species are gnarled from this exposure and most individuals are less than 6 m. tall. Soils have accumulated a thick organic layer and boulders and bedrock outcrops are plentiful. This plant community might best be classified as a stunted variant of the adjacent Quercus rubra/Angelica triquinata submesotrophic forest association. Plants characteristic of this variant might include Abies balsamea and Acer spicatum.
Quercus rubra in plot average 20-30 cm. dbh. Betula allegheniensis are up to 10 cm.
Plot location: at crest of cliff, ca. 150m NE of Byrds Nest No. 2 shelter.
