Observation Narrative
Soil pit was difficult to dig due to abundant flat stones. These stone have created a cold air drainage regime within the soil and northern plant species present (Betula cordifolia and Cornus canadensis) reflect this. Lower on the slope a small population of Gymnocarpium Dryopteris exists, also reflecting cold air drainage. Stone in the soil near the Gymnocarpium were very cold to the touch.
Plot location: plot situated within the paper birch stand - access via Rip Rap Overlook parking area.
