Observation Narrative
Vegetation of this exposed greenstone cliff/outcrop consists of a patchy scrub and herbaceous mosaic. Areas of unvegetated (except for lichens) bedrock are present throughout the area, with small ephemeral bedrock pools scattered on the more level edges. Trees and shrubs occurring here are wind blasted, with none reaching 6 m. in height or 2.5 cm. dbh. Unlike the outcrops at Crescent Rocks Overlook, this outcrop is remote and rarely visited, supporting a pristine high elevation barren. The state rare plant Sibbaldiopsis tridentata is phenomenally abundant here, forming dense mats; other state rare species present include Abies balsamea, Solidago simplex ssp. randii var. randii and Huperzia appalachiana (not in plot).
Plot location: Shenandoah National Park. On clifftop ca. 75m downslope of Skyline Drive between Crescent Rocks Overlook and Hawksbill Gap.
