Observation Narrative
Plot is representative of rich, high elevation forest occurring on greenstone and granitic substrates in the northern VA. Blue Ridge. There are many blowdowns and trees with crown damage in the general area of the plot, the results of several recent ice storms. Noteworthy plants occurring in large numbers on this slope include Aconitum reclinatum and Dryopteris goldiana (not in plot). Underlying charnockite parent material overlain by colluvium consisting of bouldery/stony metabasalt.
Plot location: Shenandoah National Park. NNW facing slope just east of Hawksbill Spring and the old Timber Hollow Road, ca. 130m NW of Hawksbill Gap.
