Observation Narrative
The plot is representative of a scrub/herbaceous wetland mosaic occupying the lowlands of Big Meadows south of Skyline Dr. This vegetation is floristically and compositionally unusual and has affinities to mafic wetlands of the southern blue ridge. The state rare forb Sanguisorba canadensis is a dominant species in the herbaceous openings; other noteworthy species are the state rare sedges Carex conoidea and C. buxbaumii. A recent lack of fire and high levels of herbivory by overpopulous deer have led to a dramatic increase of shrub cover and a reduction of herbaceous vigor in this community over the past twenty years.
Plot location: Shenandoah National Park. Swale bottom in western portion of Big Meadows proper, south of Skyline Drive and ca. 230m south of Byrd Visitor Center.
