At Big Meadows, swards of this grass occur in a patch mosaic with Cornus racemosa-Spiraea alba var. latifolia scrub thickets and herbaceous patches dominated by Carex spp. and Sanguisorba canadensis.
Plot location: Shenandoah National Park. Swale bottom in western portion of Big Meadows proper, south of Skyline Drive and ca. 240m south of Byrd Visitor Center.
