Observation Narrative
Plot documents sparsely shrubby, mostly herbaceous vegetation occurring on a high elevation exposure of charnockite. Dark minerals (e.g. pyroxene, garnet, hornblende) in this granitoid bedrock presumably influence soil chemistry at this site, supporting vegetation that is very similar to some barrens on base rich greenstone. Fertility may also be enhanced by colluvial deposition from moderately fertile slopes above the outcrop. Downslope, on steeper and more dramatically convex exposures of the same rock, there is little colluvial deposition and distinctly oligotrophic conditions and oak-pine-ericad vegetation prevail (see plot SHNP025).
Plot location: Shenandoah NP. At top of large rock outcrop/scrub thicket complex at Millers Head, ca. 0.75 miles west of Skyland. Plot is located just downslope of the concrete and stone observation platform in the uppermost, relatively gentle rock outcrop.
