Observation Narrative
The vegetation of the Blue Ridge crest in the vicinity of this plot is essentially a rich northern red oak (Quercus rubra) forest. Quercus alba and Fraxinus americana are common canopy associates ad the herbaceous layer is comparable to that of many fertile lower slope coves. The site is noticeable for its large population of the globally rare plant Euphorbia purpurea, which inhabits both the mesic crest forests and the borders of seeps along the head of Entry Run.
Plot location: Shenandoah NP. In gentle saddle on summit of Blue Ridge above the head of Entry Run. Plot is located between the Appalachian Trail and Skyline Drive at a point 0.9 miles NE of Baldface Mountain Overlook and 0.7 miles SSW of the jct. of Skyline Drive and Pocosin Fire Road.
